Handwriting to font questions

How do I turn my handwriting into a font?

Download the template above and print it. Write one character in each box with a dark pen, take a flat photo or scan with all four black corner squares in view, and upload it. Typesay finds every box, traces your letters and builds a font you can download straight away.

Is it free?

Yes. Making and downloading your handwriting font is free, with no account needed. The font is yours to use for personal and commercial work.

Can I make a font without a printer?

Yes. Draw each character in the drawing box with a mouse, finger or stylus. You can also upload a template first and then redraw any letters you are not happy with.

What file do I get?

An OpenType font (.otf). It installs on Windows and Mac, works in Word, Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator and Figma, and can be used on a website with @font-face.

Is my handwriting uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is read and the font is built inside your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers or stored.

How do I get the best result?

Use a black felt tip or gel pen, keep each character inside its box, and photograph the page flat in daylight without shadows. Use the thickness and spacing sliders to fine tune the font before you download it.

Do I have to fill in every box?

No. Draw as many characters as you like. If you only draw capitals, the small letters borrow them, and the other way round. Anything you skip falls back to the default font where you use it.

How do I install my new font?

On Windows, right click the .otf file and choose Install. On a Mac, double click it and choose Install Font. Restart your design app and it will appear in the font list under the name you gave it.
